I stumbled upon the Hampi Police Station today – out of town as it is, it seemed an extremely quiet, relaxed place, relatively far from the tourist centre of the village. I stopped to chat to a policeman and his first question was, inevitably, which country are you from? Well, the excitement when I said I’m from Scotland… Scotland! Scotland police department very famous! He exclaimed. Well I have to say I was rather surprised he thought that and asked him why: Strong! Scottish police department are very strong! Grrr. He actually said grrr while flexing his bicep. Then as I tried my best to hide my surprise he expanded further to me: And intelligent! Scotland Police Department strong and intelligent! Yes yes. He seemed surprised and a little concerned that I was so surprised so I made sure he knew this was only down to the fact that Indian police are aware that Scottish police are strong and intelligent, rather than anything else, of course…
