I’ve travelled a good bit in the past few years, so a frequent question from old friends and new is “what’s your favourite country?”. It’s a tough one so I’m going to do a top 5; luckily for you, Northern Hemisphere folks, they all happen to be good winter destinations… get your passports out…
Japan. Another world, Japan is the most fascinating country I’ve ever visited. Tokyo is incredible, the people are the kindest, most helpful you’ll ever meet and if you like sushi you’re in for a treat. Plus in winter – they have great skiing.Me waiting to go into a sumo match. If you’re going over winter, you need one of these hats
The Philippines A country blighted by natural disasters but blessed with fabulous beaches. My time here uncovered undiscovered yet accessible islands and the most fun, happy people you’ll come across in Asia. By November the typhoon season is over, so the next couple months is the perfect time to check out those beaches and dive in those shipwrecks if that’s your thing.Filipino child after typhoon Yolanda
Argentina Jaw dropping landscapes in the Andes and down into Patagonia, wonderful waterfalls which I would deem one of the most impressive natural sights I’ve ever seen, world class red wine, world class steak…. need I go on? My 6 months working in Buenos Aires had me eating all day and dancing all night. December is the height of summer so the far south is open for business, but if you’re in need of a fabulous beach, check out Uruguay – only an hour away by boat.Tango on the streets of Buenos Aires. Denim mini skirt not mandatory
Myanmar (Burma) Shut off from the outside world for many years and only recently accessible to foreigners, Myanmar is one to get to now, before it turns into another Thailand. Incredible temples at Bagan, world class beaches undiscovered by tourists and people who are as untouched by the outside world as you’ll ever find; kind, polite and endearingly innocent in their world view. Monsoon season is over so December to March is hot, but dry.
ScotlandIsle of Skye. The sky’s always that colour in ScotlandWhy are you laughing? You’ll find some of the best beaches in the world on the west coast, world class whisky all over the country and the people are amaaaazing. I could be lying about winter being the best time to go though…
