Delhi Lies

It started the way it was always going to in Delhi – with a lie. I never really expected the driver from the guest house to turn up at the airport, I barely even bothered to scan for my name on the scrappy bits of paper being held up before phoning him to hear the lie road was blocked. It didn’t matter – things got better when I successfully got into the back of a taxi, rather than a police van, which is what I did last time I arrived at Delhi airport.

So given the theme of this blog is running I’ll tell you about my running for the past 2 days: I’ve run from scammers who are intent on shooing you into the back of a rickshaw to take you to a “government” tourist office; I’ve run from men touching my bum – three yesterday (actually two, one did a u-turn so he could do it twice); I’ve run from the endless men on the street asking me the same inane questions over and over in attempt to lure me into buying something I don’t want (train ticket, jewellery, scarf) from a government approved seller. The word government is banded around spuriously to convince me to part with some of my millions of dollars I so clearly have in the bank.

The best way to avoid these people is to actually run. What a joy! Last night I ran round India Gate for half an hour and not one person bothered me.

This morning I ran round Lodhi Gardens for 1 hour and 4 minutes and yes, that 4 minutes does count as it was 36 degrees and every minute felt like an hour! Unfortunately I stopped a couple of times to take a few leisurely pictures (how dare I) and got accosted by one of those liars, who also stank, telling me a load of rubbish about history and then asked for some money for the pleasure. Seriously? Would you ever just leave me alone? It’s so annoying and tiring! I threw 5 rupees (5p) at him which he was incredibly insulted by before I literally ran off!
